The hotel was originally built in the 17th century and is the oldest bar/hotel still operating in Lancaster. Since the current owners bought The Sun Hotel in 2003, they have carefully rebuilt it. The Sun Hotel is a listed building situated in the Lancaster Castle Conservation Area. As a result, it was impossible to add a lift - the 1st and 2nd floors are accessed by stairs.
